Thoughts About Ridiculous Theater and Gun Violence
I am angry and disappointed in our country. We are so full of contradictions. “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” are fundamental values of this nation. Yet, many of our legislators are in denial about gun violence.
When innocent first graders were slaughtered in Sandy Hook, I thought we would finally do something about gun violence. (2012). No.
Then after the Parkland School shootings. (2018) No.
Then after the Jan. 6th invasion of the Capitol. Angry Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, destroyed property, defecated in hallways and threatened Congress. Five people died. Most members of the GOP, however, act as if there was no threat and no connection between the mob and Donald Trump’s words to the crowd that morning.
Here we are after the Boulder shootings and the Atlanta shootings. (2021).
And, another Capitol Police person has died.
And an incident in Texas.
Too soon to tell, but I’m going to guess nothing will happen. In fact, we have a Congresswoman who is so pro-guns, she has harassed one of the young survivors of Parkland. Who does that? How did she get elected?
Then we have Senator Ted Cruz ‘s predictable blowup claiming this is “ridiculous Democratic theater” — that the problem is not the weapon, but the murderer. Well, Duh. There is no foolproof way to identify a murderer before he/she strikes. It is reasonable to limit access to assault weapons. With his usual bombastic style, Cruz equivocates that restrictions on assault weapons leave law-abiding citizens defenseless. Hogwash.
Adding to the problem is Senator John Kennedy, Ala saying “I believe we have an idiot control problem.”
If nothing meaningful and reasonable is going to get done about access to assault weapons, we might as well leave ALL flags at half-mast. What is the point?
